Flam

A flam is a rudiment used by drummers and percussionists in a variety of music styles.. It consists of a quiet "grace" note on one hand followed by a louder "primary" stroke on the opposite hand. The two notes are played almost simultaneously, and are intended to sound like a single, 'broader' note.

The easiest way to perform a flam is to raise both of your sticks at the same time. Lift one stick slightly above the other, if you are leading with the left hand then leave the left hand lower than the right hand, if you are leading with the right hand then make the left hand higher than the right hand. Now that both of your sticks are at different heights, bring them down at the same speed. Naturally the first stroke will be quieter than the second stroke. To practice this rudiment use a metronome and go back and forth on your practice pad switching between right hand lead and left hand lead.

Flams can be combined with other different rudiments such as a paradiddle which will result in a flamadiddle and a triplet which will result in a flam accent.
