MOP A mop is a tool generally used for cleaning floors. A wet mop typically has a long handle and a head made of thick, soft strands of water-absorbing fabric. To clean a floor, the mop is soaked in a bucket of water or cleaning fluid and scrubbed against the surface. Some buckets include a wringer to strain excess water from the mop, so as not to saturate the floor. Mops are also often used to clean up liquid spills. The inventor Jacob Howe received a patent for a mop in 1837. U.S. Patent 241 A dust mop or dry mop is designed to pick up dust. They tend to have much wider heads and shorter strands than wet mops. A robotic mop such as the Scooba is considered a mop, even though it does not look at all like a traditional mop, because it performs the same function as a traditional mop. Mop is circular shape wheel made up of cotton or jute or other fibres which are stiched or bonded together. A hole is provided at centre to mount mops on machine's shaft. These Mops are used in metal finishing operations like buffing etc. HistoryThe mop was invented by Thomas W. Stewart, an African-American inventor. It was awarded Patent Number 499,402 on June 13, 1893. This mop was made of yarn for both house and industrial cleaning. It was a very significant change in technology because, Stewarts mop had the first replaceable head, and the first to have a lever to wring it out. This made homes a lot healthier. Peter Vosbikian created a sponge mop that uses a metal lever to press the mop dry. In 1999 Scotch Brite created a mop that was made of natural cellulose and polyester. Spanish InventionIn 1956 an officer and engineer of the Spanish Air Force, Manuel Jalón Corominas, developed a stick with a cleaning cloth and with it a bucket with a pressing colander. By 1965 Mr. Jalon had developed the first and current model mop/bucket, and began producing plastic-made model products.
