The ExplosionThe Cambrian explosion is the geologically sudden appearance in the fossil record of the ancestors of familiar animals, estimated to take around 10 million years from 530 to 520 million years ago. It is accompanied by a similar pattern of diversification in organisms such as phytoplankton and the various colonial calcareous microfossils grouped together as calcimicrobes. The base of the Cambrian 542 million years ago is marked by an explosion of diversity in burrows, and strong geochemical perturbations, including excursions in carbon and sulfur isotopes.
